Economic evaluation of health technologies

I have been involved in the evaluation and design of a number of complex mental health interventions, musculoskeletal devices and patients’ decisions experiments. My collaborations include the Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials, the School of Health Care at the University of Leeds, and the Clinical Trials unit at the University of Warwick.

I was also a health economist expert taking part of an Academic Evidence Review Group for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the appraisal of the use of new treatments in the NHS (2008-2011). I reviewed and commented on manufacturers' submission and model, and attended appraisal committee meetings where the NICE committee board members made their final recommendations for the NHS in terms of future treatments being provided to patients.

Several of my research outputs in applied health research have been disseminated in the press and changed the way care is delivered to patients within the NHS.

  • For example, I have worked on a decision-aid for MMR vaccination; this research work has had an important impact on general practice and raised interest from the medias and a number of newspapers and health-related news and blogs have shown interest in the results of the study and its impact on patients (see https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/140729093202.htm).

  • Similarly my recent research work in musculoskeletal health has been widely disseminated and cited. For example my collaborative work on dorsal fixation was published along with a special editorial authored by a surgeon in the Bone Joint Journal (Hobby, J.L. Bone Joint J August 2015 vol. 97-B no. 8 1015-1016).

  • My portfolio of work on self-harm is also quite substantial, looking into the evaluation of treatments for adolescents and for adults. The outputs of the SHIFT trial, which looked into family therapy as an intervention for young people seen after second or subsequent episodes of self-harm were recently published in the Lancet and in the media. Beyond research, I have given several invited seminars, talks, lectures and contributed to roundtables to discuss health technology assessment methods and present the NICE viewpoint to francophone audiences. Here is a list of some of the talks:
